Where did coffee originally come from? – it originated in Ethiopia more than 1,000 years ago in the Ethiopian province of Kaffa, thus giving "coffee" as we know it today, its name. The coffee plant, Coffee Arabica, still grows wild in the forests of the Ethiopian highlands.
Specialty coffees of the world may all be descendants of the same plant, arabica coffee but the location in which the beans are grown imparts the different flavors and characteristics. Coffee grows best around 1,500 meters (4,500 feet) above sea level – very close to the elevation of tropical rain forests, which are generally 1,600-1,900 (4800-5700) meters above sea level in tropical climates.
